Alan Simpson Denounces Intolerance in the Republican Party

We have homophobes in our party. That’s disgusting to me. We’re all human beings. We’re all God’s children. Now if they’re going to get off on that stuff–Santorum has said some cruel things–cruel, cruel things–about homosexuals. Ask him about it; see if he attributes the cruelness of his remarks years ago. Foul.

The GOP needs more of this – the world needs more of this. I think it’s quite telling at the end when Matthews comments that Simpson hasn’t had more political success because “They [Republicans] don’t think like you do.” No, many of them don’t – and the ones that do are suspiciously quiet.

They probably remain silent for fear of being accused of not being a “real conservative.” Practically speaking, however, failure to condemn hate is no different than acceptance in the eyes of others.

Moderate conservatives should step up with their votes and voices and let it be known to their party that intolerance is simply not acceptable to them. I say this not as a card carrying lib’rul who is trying to convert you, but as a regular citizen who thinks the Founders got this one right:

I suspect if Simpson were still holding elected office that these words would have never passed his lips. But I could be wrong.

And yes, comments like this, in the eyes of the Tea Bagger mentality within the GOP, makes him a RINO.

I’m a Christian and the way I figure it is if you’re born gay then that means God made you that way. The scriptures used for any homophobes’ argument have been misinterpreted so many times I don’t know how they know what’s up or down!
