A little political humor for you.  Sometimes it’s good to laugh so we don’t cry…and there’s an awful lot to cry about right now.

Obama Orders Hospital Visiting Rights for Gays

President Obama has asked the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a rule that would prevent hospitals from denying visitation privileges to gay and lesbian partners.

The president’s Thursday memo said, “There are few moments in our lives that call for greater compassion and companionship than when a loved one is admitted to the hospital. … Yet every day, all across America, patients are denied the kindnesses and caring of a loved one at their sides.”  Story HERE.

It’s pretty sad that there was even a need for this directive – the last thing the ill and dying need on top of the stress of illness is being kept apart from a loved one, yet it happens regularly – often when the biological family of the patient disagrees with the patient’s choice (read: gender) in mate.  That, of course is another hurdle altogether.

I’m glad to see this small, but concrete, step has been taken to comfort the sick.  In some cases, terminally ill patients have been unable to see their partners in their time of need – it’s heartbreaking, really.  And change is long overdue.

The ruling affects only gays and lesbians, so why is a small, vocal, contingent so upset with it?  No one is sending gays and lesbians to visit them in the hospital – the rule doesn’t order gay candystripers!  It is meant to provide some comfort to those in need.  It costs nothing in terms of tax dollars or any other funds.  Please, go protest something else more important – something that actually has anything at all to do with you, because your blatant demonstration of hate is repugnant, even to most moderate conservatives with this issue – it’s not going to win you any fans.

And to Mr. Obama, this is a good first step, but don’t let it be the last, ok?

Indeed it is.

From barackobama.com:

There are things that are a big deal — birthdays, anniversaries, the NCAA Championship game. And then there are things that are a BFD, like delivering health insurance to 32 million Americans. We worked hard together to make health reform a reality, and now you can celebrate this historic victory with this shirt.

This shirt is super-soft, fine jersey cotton, union-printed, and made in the USA.  Due to high demand, please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery.

You can pick one up here if you like…just don’t wear it around any of Palin’s people or they might corner you and start with the Hopey Changey Inquisition!

And in case you missed it, you can watch Biden’s fabulous oops here.  I have to agree with Press Secretary Robert Gibbs who then tweeted “And yes Mr. Vice President, you’re right…”

Heh.

“Obama sticker causes road rage”

That’s the caption under news video featured in a news story about a man who (allegedly) became so enraged at a vehicle sporting an Obama-Biden bumper sticker that he decided to tackle the problem himself, namely, by ramming the car, containing a ten-year old child and her father, with his SUV.  Out of control?  Yes.  Hateful?  Yes?  Unexpected?  Not anymore.

And no doubt the Obama sticker caused the road rage, per the caption.  It had nothing to do with the innocent wing-nut ramming his fellow Americans with his SUV.  Clearly, the sticker is to blame and should serve hard time for inciting the violence.  Bad, BAD sticker!!!

Yesterday I mentioned on another site that when my baby doesn’t get her way, she cries and flails angrily about for a few minutes and if that doesn’t get her what she wants (it doesn’t), she will sometimes creep over and bite me on the foot.

I guess the tantrums aren’t working out for the angry righties and because some of them are at the emotional development level of a 22 month old toddler, they are dealing with it in essentially the same way, albeit on a larger scale.

Way to get your point across, whackos – I’m sure you’ll get the law repealed this way.

Politics Perverted

The passion against health care reform has elevated to such a level that protesters* on Tuesday mocked an apparent Parkinson’s Disease victim, scorning him as a “communist” who is looking for “handouts.”

It’s appalling by any standard – wouldn’t you agree?  Is it a “family value” to viciously mock the infirm – the weakest of us?  Is it a characteristic of a “good Christian?”  Certainly not.  And yet there it is on film.  Beyond me, but there it is.

If, as I suspect, extreme right-wing rhetoric is producing this type of activity, this type of vengeful behavior, we (we being human beings, not members of any political party) should act against those who promote it as best we can.

In 2009 Mr. Limbaugh, for example, said he’d like to see President Obama fail.  That sort of Anti-American attitude is in no way beneficial to anyone, conservatives, liberals – no one.  But Limbaugh doesn’t care; he’s got what he wants:  people are still tuning in, feeding the spread of hate with their own personal allotment of advertising dollars.

Stop tuning in, even for the drama, the inaccuracy, the “entertainment.”  Ratings lead to advertising dollars, no matter the reason people are watching.   Contact advertisers and express your dissatisfaction with their divisive and offensive ideas, particular if you are a moderate conservative.

Even conservative politicians and Republican Party organizers are afraid to lash out due to the power of this divisive, hate-filled media rhetoric – afraid of being labeled a closeted liberal, a socialist, or just not a “real” conservative and given the boot…even if they know this type of media is ultimately a vile, vile creature, beneficial to no one.

Liberals share blame, to a lesser extent, for giving these talking heads the time of day (yes, I’m doing it right now, but no one pays attention to me).  John Stewart, the love of my life, puts these fools in the limelight Monday through Thursday;  he hilariously makes them out to be buffoons on his comedy show, no doubt, but as the old saying goes even negative publicity is good publicity.  Is he serving to enlighten us or, ultimately, is his commentary, by way of sheer exposure, doing more of a disservice to the moderates among us than helping?

Conservatives – extreme right-wing rhetoric is your monster – you’ve fed it and coddled it, and seen it grow larger and more powerful and now, like the tiger in the suburban backyard, it’s not cute or entertaining anymore.  It’s scary and it is hurting people.  It’s your responsibility to cut back on its financial nourishment and let it wither into the uninteresting sideshow that it really is.  Our country, our children, will all be better off in the long run.

*And on a side note to that video, how many of the elderly in that video would have a conniption fit if their “socialized” Medicare benefits were taken away.  What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, no?
